Parting Words from Mallory

Dear WEA Members,

The past year and a half has been a remarkable experience for me. In the time that I have served as the National Office Manger of the Wilderness Education Association I have seen the organization undergo a substantial reinvention, move to from a glorified storage closet to the ‘big office in the corner’ and consistently produce a well-attended and forward-thinking National Conference on Outdoor Leadership. I am honored to have had the opportunity to stretch my wings in a place that is making such progress and work with individuals who are so invested.

Some of you may be aware that I have resigned as the National Office Manger of the Wilderness Education Association effective July 1st 2010 in order to pursue my Masters in Education and gain more valuable teaching experience. I am looking forward to beginning a new field of work, and getting back into ‘student mode’ with great anticipation. I know that my substantial life change, with its inevitable uncertainties won’t be easy or glamorous; I have confidence that working with the best educators in the industry will help me pull through the late night lesson planning and the first days of student teaching.

I would like to personally thank Mary Williams for her mentorship the past few years, and for being a fantastic boss during my tenure at the National Office. Mary has demonstrated to me what a tiny office can accomplish when we challenge ourselves to be resourceful, take initiative, and think outside the box. Ultimately it was Mary’s advice and steadfast commitment to excellence as the Executive Director that finally convinced me to take the plunge, go back to school, and develop my own excellence as an educator.  When I think of all I have learned, the person I have become, and the innumerable fits of laughter at the National Office throughout the past year and a half-- I realize that I have been very blessed. Thank you, Mary. I will sincerely miss sharing the other side of the desk with you.

To the rest of you, I’ll be around. So stay in touch!

Sincerely,

Mallory Rickbeil

Office Manager (to the STARS)
